In 1904, Fernley Nevada was officially born as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Later on, the Newlands Reclamation Project resulted in the construction of Derby Dam and the establishment of irrigated farms. These family homesteads supported a scattered population, but many of them were foreclosed during the great depression.
Visitors can examine the history around Fernley Nevada at Fort Churchill State Park in Silver Springs, a former Civil War military outpost that is now a historic site and campground, with miles of hiking. There is also the Veteran's Cemetery in Fernley Nevada, were hundreds of former service men and women now rest.
Today, Fernley Nevada is a growing and flourishing community. Major industrial development has resulted in new schools, subdivisions and recreational facilities.
Numerous outdoor recreational opportunities are found around Fernley Nevada, such as fishing and swimming, including nearby Lahontan State Recreation Area. The Reno-Fernley Raceway attracts motor enthusiasts year-round and features three different tracks built for speed, while the Golf Club at Fernley Nevada welcomes avid golfers to spend a great day on the links.
